Poland vs Portugal vs Romania: Where Should You Build Your Engineering Team?
Three markets, three very different hiring dynamics. A practical comparison for teams choosing a European engineering base.

The question is usually framed as a cost comparison. It should be framed as a depth-of-market comparison, because the cost differential narrows every year and the talent depth does not.
Poland
The deepest senior pool of the three, particularly in backend, platform and security. Competition is correspondingly high, and candidates are experienced negotiators. Expect a longer, more competitive process at senior level.
Portugal
Strong product engineering and design talent, a well-established remote culture, and an English-fluent market. Senior depth is thinner than Poland's, and the best candidates are frequently already employed by foreign remote-first companies.
Romania
Excellent engineering fundamentals and the most favourable cost position of the three, with a market historically shaped by outsourcing. Product-oriented candidates require more careful screening for the transition.
