Engineering Compensation Across Europe
How engineering pay differs across nine markets, and why the gap is narrowing more slowly than expected.

Remote work was expected to flatten European engineering compensation. Five years on, the differential has compressed at senior level and barely moved at mid level.
Why senior compressed first
Senior candidates are the ones remote-first employers compete for internationally, so their local market ceases to be the reference point. Mid-level candidates are still hired locally, and are still benchmarked locally.
Practical implications
- Cost arbitrage at senior level is largely gone.
- Mid-level hiring in CEE remains materially cheaper.
- Location-based bands are increasingly contested by candidates.
- Transparent, published bands reduce late-stage friction.
